Learning to read is a journey of exciting discoveries — and one of the biggest moments for young readers is understanding how the Magic E changes everything. That’s why I’m happy to introduce the newest free app from Play English School, designed to help children master one of the most important phonics rules in the English language, Magic E!
What is the Magic E App?
The Magic E app focuses on long vowel words — words where a silent e at the end of the word makes the vowel say its name. So cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, and hop becomes hope.
The app covers 169 words across four vowel groups:
- a_e (cake, wave, snake…)
- i_e (bike, kite, smile…)
- o_e (home, rose, stone…)
- u_e (cube, tune, flute…)
Each word is displayed as individual letter tiles. Children tap each tile to hear its sound, with the long vowel highlighted in purple and the magic e highlighted in pink — making the pattern clear and visual. Tapping the pink e plays a whispered “silent e” sound, helping children understand exactly what it does.

Progress is saved automatically, so children can return to the app and continue exactly where they left off.
